What does it mean to be a good citizen?

"The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." -- Thomas Jefferson

I value my citizenship and will fight to protect it.

What this means to me:
1) Participating in the process. If you don't vote, you don't have a right to complain.
2) Understanding the issues, including the short- and long-term implications of our government's decisions.
3) Speaking out when I think something is wrong.
4) Working for change when I think something is wrong.

Yes, it is important to me to be a good citizen and I strive to be one.

Comments:
Most of you know I live in the liberal state of Massachusetts.

I know a few people who said, half joking, that if the Bush administration continued the policies of it's second term, they would move to Canada.

I'd rather stay and fight for what I believe in.

This is my country, too.

It's been no secret for some time now that I've been entertaining the notion of emigrating to Canada. I'd like to make very clear that my main interest in that comes from my love of Canada, which I visit at least two or three times a year, and not from a distaste for the U.S. Moving to Canada to 'get away' from the U.S. would be like moving to Providence to 'get away' from Boston.

I also feel that if my biggest fears about the U.S. turn out to be true, then 'fleeing' to Canada won't help, it will only delay the inevitable, and possibly even increase my overall suffering. Ideally, where possible, people of good will should try to stay and fix this country, for the well-being of everyone in the world.
