Go see Decasia
Jan. 5th, 2003 11:17 amI first heard about Decasia on slashdot and read the reviews on the New York Times website. As loathe as I am to give more to my cable company, I'm considering paying to get the Sundance Channel so I can watch and tape this film.
I'm not so sure I want to spend $35 to buy a VHS copy. Decasia is about the death and decay of film and capturing that beauty. But Decasia is available only on VHS, another dying media. I'm going to have enough difficulty keeping the content of my VHS tapes alive once the VHS format dies entirely. In 10 years from now, these tapes will be unwatchable - and nobody will want to watch old, grainy distorted images from VHS tapes. If the images are not available in HDTV format, they will be forgotten.
Yet I find myself falling victim to this same dilemma. If Decasia were available on DVD, I'd probably lay out the cash to buy it. I'm not sure what to do. In my heart of hearts, I think sending the $35 directly to the artist beats giving another $5/month to ATT Broadband.
