I awoke early this morning not knowing that it was just before 7 AM, as my alarm failed the previous morning and I forgot to reset it. I turned on WBUR and listened to the headlines. As I listened, I heard the siren from a fire truck, not an uncommon occurrence in West Medford. [livejournal.com profile] cosmicgarden burst into the bedroom: the house across the street was on fire. I dressed quickly, found my keys and dashed outside. Last night, I parked my car on the legal side of the street - directly in front of the burning house. There were flames shooting out the third-floor bedroom windows. Only one truck was onsite, but more were quickly on their way. I got into my car and a fireman directed me to park in our neighbor's driveway, effectively blocking them in as a second pumper truck arrived. Within minutes, we had 4 pumpers and 2 ladder trucks blocking all of Usher Rd.

The family who owned the house lived on the second and third floors and had a renter who lived on the first floor. Although the fire damage seems to have been contained to the top floor and part of the roof, the interior suffered heavy water damage. As such the house is not fit for living. [livejournal.com profile] cosmicgarden and I will volunteer what help we can, probably a few meals, blankets, money etc. If they lost a computer, I'll donate one built out of parts I already own.

In the meantime, I've got to call my insurance company to set up that renter's policy I've been meaning to do for the past few years.

Update
I should mention how impressed I am with the Medford FD, especially how they gingerly maneuvered those huge trucks so they would not damage any vehicle on our narrow street. They really are here to serve the community.
